On Saturday, the 11th of November 2012, 10.30-18.00, the fourth “Balkansalon” took place in the Donaubüro (Danube Office) in Ulm. The aim was getting to know in the playful way of a European Role Play the decision-making processes and difficulties on the way to common Europe.

On 11th of October 2012, a group of 7 local government politicians, lord mayors and heads of town councils, from various municipalities in Bulgaria accompanied by Dr. Gabriele Thoens and Asparuch Panov from the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit, Berlin, visited ZAWiW of Ulm University to inform themselves about scientific and pedagogical initiatives for the promotion of intercultural cooperation in the Danube Region and about the activities of the network Danube-Networkers.
The European expert conference, 8th-11th July 2012 in Ulm
The European expert conference Active Ageing and Intergenerational Dialogue – a Challenge for the Danube Countries in a Common Europe”, Ulm/Neu/Ulm, took place on 8-10 July 2012 in the Congress Centre Edwin-Scharff-Haus, Neu-Ulm in the frame of the 8th International Danube Festival Ulm/Neu/Ulm and the European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity. It was the 6th conference of the European Network „Learning in Later Life“ (LiLL) and the first conference in the which currently initiated network “Danube-Networkers” introduced itself. Over 200 scientists, representatives from the fields of culture, adult and seniors’ education as well as seniors with disseminator function from 24 countries focused on the subject “new directions in seniors’ education” handled in lectures, workshops and a poster exhibition from intergenerational and intercultural perspectives.
European Learning Partnership “Women in older age” ended successful
Recent demographic data shows that in the future, there will be many very old people, mainly women, in all European societies. There is a lack of role models for an active old age, seen as something positive in spite of crises and existing constraints.

Project DANET – Danube-Networkers, Neighbours at Work successfully completed
In four national and two cross-national forums a lively exchange of views took place between experts and older citizens about important issues concerning the whole Danube-Region. Furthermore, the project promoted the idea of lifelong learning and civil participation of older people in this European area leading to important steps in the project partners’ institutions to initiate structures providing target-group related education and other related activities. The project was closed by a conference in Freiburg, Germany, where a resolution was formulated by the project groups.

Danube-Networkers – Neighbours at work. Special Edition of the Journal danube connects, published in december 2011
Since 2008 the Centre for General Scientific Education (ZAWiW) of Ulm University is a drving force in building a network for institutions of cultural and educational work for older adults, the network “Danube-Networkers”. The goal is to strengthen seniors’ education as well as intergenerational cooperation in the Danube Region. The special edition of danube connects document the experiences made in ththe project DANET and further Danube projects.
Donaubüro Ulm / Neu Ulm starts portal for citizens.
Numerous interactive possibilities should encourage citizens to get involved and to promote the exchange along the Danube – on local level and internationally. Ulm’s Mayor and General Manager of the Donaubuero Gunter Czisch emphasizes the model-function or other communities when it comes to civic participation of www.donaubuero.de.

Media Project Old and Young along the Danube (Danube-Networkers Lectures, DALEC)
Between December 2011 and July 2012, the Donabüro Ulm/Neu-Ulm in cooperation with scientific education and civil society institutions from five countries (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria) implements the “Media Project Old and Young” (Danube-Networkers Lectures, DALEC) with the thematic focus “Values and Paths along the Danube”. The project’s subject corresponds to this year’s topic of the city of Ulm and the motto of the Danube Festival 2012: “New spirit along the Danube”. The key tasks are assigned to the Centre for General Scientific Continuing Education of Ulm University (in short ZAWIW).
